GTO engineering began in earnest in the early 1980s and by the mid-2000s, had grown into a significant operation. Through their restoration work and with global demand, they ended up remanufacturing the majority of the running gear for 250-series cars, including engines, gearboxes, axles, brakes and suspension. Today it’s common to see 250 and 275 series cars running complete GTO drivelines by GTO, keeping their original drivelines in secure storage to preserve matching numbers.
The rebodying of Ferraris is nearly as old as the company itself. Apart from specials, the most common operation was to rebody an unloved or decrepit car into something more desirable - typically a racing 250 or SWB California Spyder. But standards were different then, and it was common to see cut corners, provided the finished car looked right.
With available parts and rising values, GTO endeavored to recreate their favorite car: the 1960 250 SWB Berlinetta Competizione. Owners are given a choice of engine, 3, 3.5 or 4L, with options to make their car suited for competition or cruising. Each car is a bespoke recreation, all parts are fully interchangeable with the original SWB, with room for some subtle modern modifications for reliability and usability.
This particular car was commissioned in 2018 using a 250 GTE donor car. Suited for cruising, it features a 3.5L 12-cylinder engine and 4-wheel disc brakes. Polished squared 15in wheels are secured by three-eared knock-offs. Other features include a smaller steering wheel, lap belts, clip-on mirrors, small spot lamps, and an ashtray.
Original 250 SWB Berlinettas consistently sell above $10M, making them to expensive to drive, even for the wealthiest of owners. Rebodies offer excellent value and the comfort of a usable car. Suitable donor cars are increasingly rare, and GTOs order books are closed to new commissions.
